  CarRec Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:
I purchased a copy of CarRec and was provided with a registration code, but when I enter the code it says "Invalid Registration Code." How do I fix this?
A:

The registration code depends on your Pocket PC "Owner Name," which is displayed when you go to the Today screen (see below). When you purchase a copy, you are asked for this name, exactly as it is displayed on your Pocket PC, including spaces, punctuation and upper/lower case. If you entered this incorrectly, fill out a support request and we will provide you with the proper registration code.

Q:
Where can I go if I have a support question or suggestions for additional features?
A:
Please use this form to give us your questions or comments.

Q:
I added a maintenance record and checked the box where it says "Task" but it didn't schedule a task for me. Why not?

A:

When you schedule a maintenance item as a task, it doesn't actually create the task until your current odometer reading approaches the reading you set in the "Next Service Odometer" field. If your car's mileage is 15000 miles, for example, and you schedule an oil change for 17000 miles, the task won't be scheduled until you enter a fuel record with an odometer reading of 16700 miles or greater. This is by design, so that you don't create a large list of tasks for items that a far in the future.

Q:
How do I modify the images on the web page generated by the Export feature?
A:
Add your images to the "\My Documents" folder on your handheld and call them carrec_car.jpg (the one on the left) and carrec_steeringwheel64.jpg (the one on the right). Ideally, create images that are 64x64 pixels.

Q:
How many cars can I track in CarRec?

A:

There is no limit to the number of cars you can store, provided you have enough memory free in your handheld device. You create a Car Profile for each car and you can switch from one car to another by clicking on File... Open Car Profile and selecting the car you'd like to see.

Q:
What's the difference between the trial version and registered version of CarRec?

A:

There is no difference. The trial version allows you to add a limited number of fuel and maintenance records but has all the features of the registered version so you can try it out to see how useful CarRec can be. When you register, additional records can be added.

Q:
I'm restoring a car. Will CarRec help me before I'm able to get the finished product back on the road?

A:

Definitely! By entering all of the repairs, parts costs, and work items that you do to the car, you'll have an up-to-the minute record of how much you spend and when you complete each part of the project. If you ever decide to sell your car, you'll also have a detailed restoration diary that any purchaser would appreciate, potentially adding value to the sale.

Q:
How do I backup data onto my desktop computer in the event of a PDA crash requiring a hard reset?

A:

CarRec defaults to storing your car data files in the Pocket PC's "My Documents" folder. When you synchronize your PDA, these files automatically get copied to a subfolder of your desktop computer's "My Documents" folder. The name of this subfolder is something like "PocketPC My Documents" where PocketPC is the name you have given to your PocketPC device. So, your data gets backed up automatically.

Even though your CarRec data is backed up whenever you sync the PDA, it's a good idea to periodically run the the "backup" program from your PDA to back up all of your data - this makes restoration from a complete crash a little easier.

If you like, you can also manually copy the CarRec data files (*.cmr) from your PDA to a memory card or to your desktop. When you copy .cmr files back to your PDA's "My Documents" folder or a subfolder, they will show up when you go to the File > Open Car Profile menu in CarRec.
